Indigenous Employment 'Getting it Right'
|
The unemployment rate for Indigenous Australians in Sydney is nearly three times the rate of the total population. Indigenous leaders do not see this as the future they want for their community and are seeking change. More and more employers are seeing real benefits to their business from employing Indigenous Australians.
‘Getting it Right’ is a GROW Sydney ACC strategy which aims to reduce the economic disadvantage of Indigenous Australians by improving employment outcomes. Employment in the private sector, where Indigenous Australians are often under represented, is a high priority.
‘Getting it Right’ is based on the shared belief that better results will be achieved if more common ground can be found between the culture and expectations of the workplace and the culture and aspirations of Indigenous Australians. It includes a series of practical publications and events that aim to assist employers, Indigenous community organisations, Indigenous jobseekers and employment organisations to make this happen.
This strategy was initiated and developed by the GROW Sydney ACC, primarily in partnership with the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
The designs for ‘Getting it Right’ publications are based on the artwork of Aboriginal artist Leeanne Hunter. The main messages depicted by Leeanne are a focus on the target of improved Indigenous employment outcomes and the strength of partnerships needed to achieve this goal.
Indigenous writer and performer Leah Purcell is the ambassador for ‘Getting it Right’. "There are enormous benefits for employers in accessing Indigenous jobseekers as it opens up a whole new resource of good employees" Leah Purcell said. "Indigenous jobseekers need practical ways to find the right employers and training, and ‘Getting it Right’ is making sure that happens."
